Book of Eli

This intro starts with an establishing shot of a creepy forest, immediately making us wonder why we would be in this setting and connoting danger. At first it seems leaves are falling from the trees, but we quickly realise that it is infact ashes, indicating some sort of natural disaster has occurred. The use of the shots of the gun and body immediately make us wonder how the man got there, as we have no idea, giving us a sense of mystery. The diegetic sound of creaks and the wind also add to the spooky atmosphere. The use of the build up of tension to a crescendo in the music is immediately contrasted when nothing happens, a strange red herring which leaves the audience confused. Pov shots from the mangy cats point of view also are a reference to voyeurism, a common theme throughout thrillers. At the end we are left with the arrow being shot towards what we presume to be the cat, leaving us on a cliffhanger. This opening sequence is great at building a creepy atmosphere, and I think we could take some of the conventions used and utilise them in our thriller.
