Disturbia

This is the beginning of the film Disturbia, a remake of the classic surveillance thriller Rear Window. The use of the calm beginning, with the son and father having gone on a fishing trip, immediately sets a calm atmosphere, and with him ringing his mother and joking around, we aren't expecting a tragedy like a car crash to happen. We see the boy immediately hurled into the forefront of the action, and I think this really does work, as it immediately gives us an impression of what the main character is going to be like later on in the film, as he may have repressed anger about the death of his father. I think the use of immediate action could be very useful in our film, as it would allow us to create a powerful opening which would immediately set the tone and establish key characters quickly. The editing style, with slow cuts during equilibrium moving to extremely fast cuts in action-packed parts is also something I'd definitely want to employ in my thriller opening, as it allows the pace of a film to change.
